HD and 4K UHD playout: inputs, outputs and formats

Nimbus plays out SD, HD and 4K UHD up to 60 fps, with several outputs per playout and separate encoder settings for each. There are no license limits on inputs, outputs or resolution. Capacity depends on the instance size, which is sized per channel.

Live inputs

  • Native

    SRT · HLS · ABR HLS · RTMP · RTP‑FEC 2D · CDI · JPEG XS

    Received by the playout directly.

  • Through AWS MediaConnect

Zixi · RIST · other protocols

Nimbus sets up the MediaConnect flow automatically.

  • Codecs

    MPEG‑2 · H.264/AVC · HEVC/H.265 · XDCAM HD · ProRes 422/4444 · XAVC · JPEG XS

Video codecs for live and file ingest. Files come from S3‑compatible storage, SFTP and other cloud storage.

If a live input drops, the playout falls back to a backup input or the emergency playlist and returns to live when the signal comes back. Typical latency from input to output is 2-5 s with SRT in and SRT or TS out.

Outputs

Several outputs per playout, each with its own encoder settings.

  • IP transport

    UDP · RTP/UDP · RTP‑FEC · RTP‑FEC 2D · SRT caller · SRT listener · HTTP

For contribution and distribution to satellite, cable and terrestrial headends and other receivers.

  • Path redundancy

    Dual RTP · Dual RTP‑FEC 2D

The same output sent over two network paths.

  • Streaming

HLS · HLS push · RTMP push · RTMP server

For OTT, FAST and streaming platforms. HLS outputs add segment duration times segment count to the latency.

  • AWS

    MediaConnect · MediaLive

Zixi, RIST and RTP/RTP‑FEC through AWS MediaConnect, and delivery to AWS MediaLive.

  • JPEG XS and CDI

    JPEG XS · CDI

JPEG XS output, and CDI on Kubernetes deployments.
